Reach out

Reaching out 1

I have learned a lifetime’s worth from a friend,

A sweet, subtle girl upon whom you could always depend,

“When you feel life is against you and the tears fall like a cascade,

Reach out,” she said, “Do not be afraid.”
“When your  boat becomes battered, and the waves become rough,

When you’ve given up on the oars, you haven’t given enough,

When you can’t look forward to tomorrow because you won’t forget yesterday,

You should always reach out, do not shy away.”
“When you follow the beliefs of others and suffer in silence,

Know that there must be more meaning to life than constant compliance,

Success only follows a sprinkling of sacrifice and a pinch of pain,

Speak up, stand out, do not live in vain.”
“When you want to question the world with words left unsaid,

Don’t think you’re inferior, don’t stay quiet instead,

Just remember that the caterpillar turns into the butterfly,

Reach out when you need help, there’s no need to cry.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       “When you’ve stepped into the battlefield with all guns blazing,

And come out, bruised and defeated, you can still be amazing,

Though heartache can be the worst wound, remember you’re still here”,

“Reach out,” she said, “Do not flee with fear.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         If ever you feel like you’re journeying through life solo,

You’ve got to grab opportunities with both hands, because, after all – YOLO!

And once is enough to live this great adventure, provided you don’t run and hide,

“Live, love, laugh, repeat,” she beamed, “Do not be terrified.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     Then one day, the heartless Fates made her lose faith in life’s game,

The sparkle in her eyes dulled and her blissful memories began to fade.

In one fateful day, she lost her sister and parents, though I knew it could never be fair,

“Reach out”, I whispered calmly, “Do not be scared.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Renewed hope filled the eyes of a girl whose personal life had always remained silent,

It was a refreshing change to be the counsellor, while she was my chatty client,

Even now when I have troubles, I reminisce about that special acquaintance I had made,

“Reach out,” she had always said, “Do not be afraid.”
